The Sword in the Stone

The Sword in the Stone is the weapon that in Arthurian legend only the rightful king of Great Britain can draw from the stone, sometimes associated with Excalibur.

In the famous Walt Disney animated film, it is said that in 6th-century England, a land of brave and courageous knights, King Uther Pendragon dies without leaving an heir to the throne. Without a king, the kingdom seems destined to be torn apart by war, until suddenly, a miracle occurs: out of nowhere in London, the "sword in the stone" appears, a sword stuck in an anvil with an inscription proclaiming that "whoever draws this sword from this rock and this anvil shall rightfully be king of England." Many try to pull the sword out, but no one can budge it even an inch, and the sword is eventually forgotten as England sinks into the Dark Ages.

Many years later, Arthur (a 12-year-old orphan commonly called Wart) manages to pull it out, and all the knights shout "Long live King Arthur!" as the crowd kneels before him. Merlin tells the boy that he will lead the Knights of the Round Table, becoming a great legend and a very popular figure in literature and cinema (though obviously at the time no one knew what cinema was).
